No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend’s were.
Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee. — John Donne (1572-1631)
i keep this quotation, ‘no man is an island’, current in mind, as it reminds me that essentially, indeed we are islands. but just as we are islands, no man is an island entirely unto himself. humans do thrive on connections. precisely why we build bridges. to connect. this is a concept that is constant with me, as i find that connections are essential to our existence. just the other day, a most unexpected source confirmed, once again, my conviction. i answered a call, and sounding congested, explained that i had had the flu, but was actually much better. the following day i received a lovely flower arrangement. this thoughtful attention did bring me much cheer, and ascertained how important our connections truly are. i felt the flowers were a ‘bridge’, metaphorically speaking, that extended a caring connection. gestures or extensions can be considered bridges that connect us. these can come from many sources and in so many different ways. make a connection. offer a flower. a smile. you may be surprised at the connections you can ‘bridge’. connections are for thebestdressup now!
